Following on from the hugely successful Year of Homecoming, a year of events and activities to celebrate Scotland’s ancestry, culture and heritage, the legacy of Homecoming endures as we continue to celebrate Scotland as the home of golf, whisky, our national poet Robert Burns and our rich culture and history.

No matter the time of year, the variety of Scotland’s culture, cuisine and climate will ensure any visit will deliver memorable experiences. Spring brings events like the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival and the Robert Burns festival in Ayrshire, ‘Burns and A’ That’, along with delicious Scottish food such as new season lamb and lobsters, while leaping salmon and mountain hares are abundant amid the Scottish wildlife.

The Scottish summer sees Highland Games take place throughout the country, and red squirrels appear in the wildlife along with Scottish summer fruits, while the long light evenings allow golfers to spend longer on the best courses in the world. Plus of course the world famous Edinburgh Festivals in August.

Autumn is the time for majestic red deer to be seen throughout the countryside while the leaves and fields of Scotland turn from green to the beautiful hues of red and brown. In the air are the sounds of Scottish traditional music festivals taking place from Shetland to Glasgow and many places in between.

Winter days are filled with cheer and merriment as we celebrate our patron saint Saint Andrew in November with dance, music and events, our winter festivals brighten up December with a huge range of activities from Christmas markets to outdoor ice skating to our world famous New Year party in Edinburgh. In January, the world’s biggest winter music festival, Celtic Connections, takes place in Glasgow, UNESCO City of Music.

Also this year:
• 2010 celebrates the eminent architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh, whose globally renowned building The Glasgow School of Art, opened its doors 100 years ago in the stylish city of Glasgow, famous for its art, design and music scene.
• From history to the future, 2010 marks 100 years of Harris Tweed. A textile still woven by traditional methods on the Hebridean islands, it is now at the forefront of fashion and design, being used in haute couture fashion and for a new Alpha Romeo car interior for example.
• A calendar of events is planned for 2010 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of J M Barrie, author of Peter Pan.
• 2010 is the 150th year of the prestigious Open Golf Championship, which is to be held in St Andrews, the home of golf in Scotland.

As you can see, there is always something to discover when you visit. After all, where will you find a golf course where the grass is kept short by grazing sheep? Where can you see the world’s largest collection of whisky? Where can you banish the dark of winter nights with a spectacular fire festival and celebrate the joy of summer with more than 2000 theatre, comedy, dance and music performances taking place in the same city at the same moment? The answer is Scotland!

VisitScotland will be at stand number 6C01 and will be pleased to answer your questions about our country. Please come by to say hello.
